Sweet & Sour: The Perpetual Transpose
— 2021
Dacartuba mar bay malab dhashaa, aad muudsataa dhabaqe
(The aloe sometimes produces honey which you suck as sweet)
Waxaan ahay macaan iyo qadhaadh, meel ku wada yaalle
(I am sweet and bitter together in one place)
— Macaan iyo Qadhaadh (Sweet and Bitter) by Axmed Ismaaciil Diiriye 'Qaasim,’ 1960, Somalia.
Sweet & Sour: The Perpetual Transpose is a three multi-channel video installation based on the poem Macaan iyo Qadhaadh (Sweet and Bitter) by Axmed Ismaaciil Diiriye ‘Qaasim.’ Much like the poem, this project investigates the duality or multiple personality complexes as part of human nature, experiences of our environment and memories. Sweet & Sour was developed during the early stages of the Coronavirus pandemic and the uprising in Minneapolis, two elements that have deeply reshaped our lives in 2020 and onwards. This project speaks to the forever changing, molding and reshaping of our lives through the lens of duality.
