This is the 5th and final installment of Spearwave 2016/2017.


Spearwave is a monthly intimate exhibition and gathering space for conversations about art and culture. We hope this gesture will foster interconnectedness, and, using spearwave as a foil, allow these artists a fresh opportunity to experiment with new ways of bringing to you the fruits of their artistic conceptions.



Mohamud Mumin

Al Futuhat al-Minneapolis / Minneapolis Openings, installation


Mumin is a photographer, visual storyteller and curator at Soomaal House of Art. He is the current American Swedish Institute Malmberg fellow and past recipient of a 2013

McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photographers. Mumin has exhibited his work locally and nationally.


Kaamil Haider

A Trial, mixed media

Haider is a graphic designer, visual artist, and designer at Soomaal House of Art. He has done branding for both national and international institutions. He applies a holistic approach to design while exploring the human interaction with designed entities. In his practice, Haider takes into account the cultural implications that give meaning to design.

Osab Mohamed

Stages of Healing, photography


Mohamed is a photographer who writes poetry and takes photographs. She likes taking photos of nature and creating art projects based on meaningful topics. Currently, she is working on her bachelor’s degree in Urban Education and hopes to educate the younger generation through photography.


Muktaar Hassan

Expatriates, documentary


Hassan is keen on changing the world for the better. He is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota pursuing a degree in Global Studies. His long-term goal is to be a Human Rights Officer in the UN. Outside of school, he enjoys traveling and safekeeping all his memories through photography.


Burhan Haji Ali

Expatriates, documentary


Ali is a photographer who loves documenting the rawness in everyday life and the fleeting beauty of those in between moments. He recently graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology in December of 2016. This is Burhan’s first art exhibit and hopes to have many more in

the near future.


Mohamed Samatar

Isfaham (Know Thyself), performance


Samatar is a cultural maker, community organizer, and performance and multimedia artist from Minneapolis. Samatar has been pursuing the field of creative curation,

production, and performance art since 2009. Through his various roles in the Twin Cities arts and organizing communities, Samatar has recently been filled with a new

inspiration of re-imagining story-telling from the perspective of performance and multimedia art.

Soomaal House of Art is a Minnesota-based Somali art collective that provides studio space, studio critiques, artistic community, mentorship for emerging Somali artists and a final exhibition space with educational programs.
